Alright guys, the time has come to begin the discussion!!!
We'll start with some general brain storming:
First, give us your definition of sustainability.
Second, come up with and post three ways in which college campuses should be involved with sustainability, either on campus or in the community.
Then, come up with a question to ask the other student summit bloggers, just like I did. Your question can be anything, and as broad even as "What do you think the main focus of our summit should be? ie sustainability on the campus, or in the community, or in curriculum, or all three, or something else, etc." or "What do we want to call our final product-thingy: Manifesto, List of Demands, List of Principles, something else, etc, etc?"
You get the general idea. This is just to get some creative juices flowing and get the ideas moving.
So:
1. What does the word "sustainability" mean to you?
2. What should the role of college campuses be in fostering sustainability? (3 ways)
3. Come up with your own question for brainstorming.
You can just click "comments" and then "post a comment" to this post to answer the first two, but click "new post" in the upper righthand menu to create a new thread for the new question you come up with. That way, people can respond to and discuss that question in separate threads.
If at all possible, try and do this by midnight of Monday (2/26) night. Obviously, there is no penalty for failing to do so, but the blog will work much better if people are blogging on it! :D

First: Sustainability is the ability to live with what resources you have and not depleting sources that one's life depends on.
Secondly: 3 ways campuses can promote sustainability: Educational events like tabling, showing these movies/vids, canvassing the surrounding community about purchasing GreenPower from their electric companies. More specifically on the education aspect: sponsoring "white elephant" picnics where everyone bring their old stuff and someone else picks it; turning out lights/equip on campus; and recycling what can be. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle...promote, live it and make change happen!! :)
Sustainability- living, acting, or making decisions in a manner in which those resources which support us are not used up, but rather preserved for future generations.
Campuses can promote sustainability by offering locally and organically grown foods, switching to compact flourescent light bulbs everywhere possible, and using earth friendly cleaning and office supplies. Sounds so easy!
1. To me sustainability means using resources in such a way that the way you live today can be continued for hundreds of years without significant depletion or loss.
2. Ways campuses can promote this idea (broad ideas): outreach and education to people on campus and in the surrounding community, figure out ways to work toward a carbon neutral goal for your campus (there are hundreds of little ways)maybe in hopes of inspiring the community at large, and trying to encouraging efficiency and reduction on campus in any number of areas.
Sustainability is to live naturally in an environment without other resources out side of the environment. For life to sustain it must be able to live off of resources surrounding it. Carrying capacity for areas are overlooked when looking to outside resources.
Ways campuses can promote sustainabilty: 1. recycling in all areas 2. requesting food in the dining halls to be bought formlocal farmers 3. education options in curriculum for others to students to become aware of sustainabilty and its importance
Sustaainabilty is when an environment can completly depend on itself using its own resources. Carrying capcity is overlooked when communities look to outside resources.
Ways campuses can promote sustainabilty: 1. recycling 2. educational courses offer 3. local foods grown from local farmers served in dining halls
haha I commented twice...whoops!
Living sustainably is living in a wy (using resources in a way) that meets current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet those same needs.
Campuses should-
-Use state of art energy efficient/conservative construction. If we are supposed to set an example, what does continuing to build energy guzzling structures say about us?
-Buy, use, and sell locally grown organic foods.
-Recycle as much as physically possible all wastes produced.
1. Sustainability means using what we have in such a responsible way that it allows us to keep it around for the future. No wastefulness, no excess.
2. College campuses can foster sustainability in a number of ways:
1) Educate college students about the consequences of not living in a sustainable manner.
2) Create fun programs (concerts, dances, etc.) that educate students on how to be sustainable in their daily lives and how to promote this lifestyle to others.
3) Recycle, recycle, recycle!!!!
Sustainability is living for today with consideration for tomorrow. People need realize what impact they are making on the earth; sustainable living keeps that impact in mind and implements ways to lessen the impact.
College campuses should: 1.Promote recycling programs to lessen waste produced, along with implementing reminders concerning water and energy use, etc. 2.Offer classes on issues concerning sustainability and good stewardship toward the earth. 3.Support Earth Day as being every day!
My question: What is a good way to get people out of their cars and walking around town?
1. To me... sustainability is the process of making daily life more "Earth-Friendly" but trying to do so in a way that won't hurt the economy or future resources.
2.
1) I think there should be an administrative position on campus, (paying position) whose specific job is to keep an eye on the recycling and paper uses. Also, this person would be in charge of keeping up with the latest technology that the campus can use to be more energy efficient.
2) Encourage recycling as 1 campus- not making several trips by individual offices and dorms to the recycling center, or as individual stops on a truck route. 1 place to bring your recycling on the designated day. With carbon emissions from your car to get to the recycling center, it’s 10 times worse to the environment if you had just thrown the stuff away.
3) Make it easier for students to be more green. There's not enough places to put your bike during class and there's not always a recycling box in classrooms to throw paper away.
